Ritt satisfied leading actor Paul Newman while training at the Actors Studio. During the creation, Newman married co-star Woodward. Will tries to press Ben and his daughter Clara (Woodward) into relationship. The review explained Welles' performing as "terrific" and as dominating of the plot, although it favored Newman, Woodward and the supporting solid. The assessment called Welles "fantastic" and "gusty", but described Woodward's participation as a "poker bluff". The newspaper hailed Woodward's interpretation of the character as "a polished perfection of knowledge". The Cincinnati Enquirer opened stating that doubts pertaining to Woodward's performing "are place at relaxation" with the launch that it named "grownup theater". The rest of the main cast also consisted of previous Actors Studio alumni, together with Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa and Lee Remick.
